Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Review

A massive, emotional RPG that redefines a classic in a bold new direction

I first played Final Fantasy 7 back in 1997, and it quickly became one of my favourite games ever. Rebirth has now joined that list.

This is not simply a retelling of the original story — it feels more like an alternate reality, and that direction makes the experience both exciting and unpredictable.

Overview

I completed Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in around 84 hours, finishing almost everything the game had to offer.

While that might sound like a lot, the majority of that time was genuinely enjoyable. There were only a few moments where pacing or controls felt frustrating.

Overall, this is one of the most complete and content-rich RPGs I’ve played in a long time.

World & Exploration

The game takes you across a large and varied world, filled with side content, missions, and activities.

Not all side content is essential — some of it can be skipped — but many of the better side quests help build relationships between party members and give more depth to the characters.

Cloud in the world

Exploration is consistently rewarding, whether through character moments, combat encounters, or discovering new parts of the world.

Combat System

The combat is one of the strongest parts of the game.

Being able to switch between party members at any time adds a lot of flexibility and keeps combat engaging. The addition of synergy skills is a standout feature.

Combat example

Synergy skills allow you to combine actions between characters, dealing high damage while also building relationships between them.

To use them effectively, you need to use abilities with each character first, which encourages active switching and involvement with the whole party.

Story

The story is where the game really shines.

It takes you on a long journey across the world, exploring the motivations of each character and the consequences of their actions.

Without spoiling anything, the game does a great job of building tension, especially toward the end where expectations from the original game come into play.

Beach scene

I went into the ending feeling genuinely unsure of what would happen, which is a rare and exciting feeling for a remake of such a well-known story.

Side Content & Minigames

One of the most addictive parts of the game was Queen’s Blood, a card-based minigame that I ended up spending far too much time on.

I even spent around three hours repeating the final challenge just to complete it — and there was no trophy tied to it.

That says a lot about how engaging the side content can be.

Visuals

The game looks absolutely incredible. Environments are detailed, characters are expressive, and the world feels alive throughout the entire experience.

Final Verdict

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is one of the best RPGs I’ve played.

It expands on the original in meaningful ways, introduces new systems that feel fresh, and delivers a long, engaging experience with a strong emotional core.

If you enjoy JRPGs, this is a must-play. Just make sure you play Remake and the Intergrade DLC first.

Final Score: 10/10
